What is GABA? And How Does Pharma GABA® Contribute to
Relaxation and Rest

You may be familiar with GABA (Gamma-Aminobutryc Acid). According to WebMD, it’s a powerful neurotransmitter that blocks impulses between the nerve cells of your brain. It is important to every one of us as low levels of GABA may be linked to anxiety or mood disorders, epilepsy or chronic pain.[1] Researchers suspect positive levels of GABA may boost mood or have a positive and calming effect on the nervous system.

You can’t obtain GABA from foods, but certain foods such as fruits, vegetables, teas and red wine contain substances such as flavonoids that influence the way GABA works in the brain.

Nutritionists also note that fermented foods can help to increase GABA levels, which would include foods that are rich in probiotics such as fermented pickles, sauerkraut, kimchi, plain kefir and coconut water kefir.[2]

There are various forms of synthetic GABA available on the market, but Pharma GABA® has emerged as a naturally-sourced, bioidentical GABA that is superior to synthetic forms of the acid, according to experts.[3] Pharma GABA is created by a process in which the amino acid glutamic acid (glutamate) is fermented using Lactobacillus hilgardii, the beneficial bacteria that is also used to ferment foods such as the vegetables in kimchi, the famous Korean dish.

Clinical studies have demonstrated the health benefits of oral administration of PharmaGABA®. When you ingest PharmaGABA®, it appears the GABA is easily absorbed and binds to GABA receptors in the peripheral nervous system, which leads to activation of the parasympathetic nervous system. This sequence launches what is called the “relaxation response” -- a physiological response in direct contrast to the stress or “fight or flight” response. In testing, the activation of the parasympathetic nervous system by PharmaGABA® is measurable within 5 to 30 minutes after use.[4]

PharmaGABA® is one of the key components of Mantra’s REST product, a synergistic sleep combination designed to support nighttime rest and recovery like never before, to strengthen immunity, improve mood, and support optimal health.

For optimal health, wellbeing and calmness are vital. Restorative sleep is vital as well, for mental and physical health, immunity and recovery. In clinical testing and usage, PharmaGABA® appears to make a positive contribution to both.
